Protect your hearing this fall
October is National Protect Your Hearing Month. Approximately 500,000 Wisconsin residents experience hearing loss or deafness, making hearing health an important topic in our community.
Fall brings football games, yardwork, and time outside while the weather is still nice. Some of those activities also bring plenty of noise. Here are a few simple ways to protect your hearing this season:
Wear hearing protection during yardwork. Use earplugs or protective earmuffs when operating leaf blowers, lawn mowers, and power tools.
Bring earplugs to the game. Cheering crowds and stadium speakers can get loud. Keep a pair handy for football games and other noisy events.
Take breaks from noise. Step into a quieter area during loud activities and limit how long you spend around loud sound.
Keep your distance from speakers. At concerts and fall festivals, choose a spot farther from the sound source.
Turn down the volume. Keep headphones and televisions at a comfortable level when listening to music, enjoying a podcast, or watching the game.
If you need to shout to be heard by someone nearby, the noise may be loud enough to harm your hearing.
It’s also important to notice changes in your hearing. Asking people to repeat themselves, turning up the TV more often, or experiencing ringing in your ears are reasons to talk with an audiologist. Our team can help you understand your hearing and discuss what might help.
